Story

Gaeta's history is deeply tied to its strategic harbor. It was a fortified Byzantine stronghold before becoming an independent maritime republic in the early Middle Ages. The city was the site of a famous last stand by the forces of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies during the Italian unification in 1860-61.
